Dear Hiring Manager,

I'm applying for the Mechanical Engineer position at Summit Fluid Systems. I've spent three years designing pump and valve components at Ridgeline Manufacturing, and your focus on industrial flow control is exactly the work I want to keep doing.

At Ridgeline I own the design of cast and machined housings from concept through production release. I model parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, apply GD&T to drawings, and run stress and thermal analyses in SolidWorks Simulation before we commit to tooling. Last year I redesigned a valve body that kept cracking in pressure testing. By adding ribs at the failure points and moving a core to even out wall thickness, I raised the safety factor from 1.4 to 2.1 without changing the casting supplier, and the part has passed every production test since.

I work closely with manufacturing. I spend time on the shop floor with machinists and our foundry contact, and I've cut machining time on two parts by about 15 percent by designing for the fixtures we already had. I also write test plans and work with our quality team on root cause analysis when a part fails inspection.

I passed the FE exam in 2023 and I'm on track to sit for the PE exam next year. Your posting mentions ASME pressure vessel standards; I've worked with Section VIII requirements on two projects and would be glad to go deeper.

I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I can contribute to your product development team. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Priya Raman, EIT

Why This Engineering Cover Letter Works

  1. Leads with three years in the same product area as the employer.
  2. Tells one design problem from failure to fix, with a before-and-after number (safety factor 1.4 to 2.1).
  3. Shows the writer works with manufacturing, not just in CAD.
  4. Answers the posting's ASME requirement by naming the code section.

Engineering Cover Letter with No Experience

New to the field? Lead with training, a related job or volunteer work, and show it with the same detail. Here is a full example.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I'm applying for the Entry-Level Mechanical Engineer position at Summit Fluid Systems. I'm graduating in May with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from State University, and industrial flow control is the field I've aimed my coursework at.

For my senior capstone I led a four-person team designing a low-cost water pump for a local nonprofit. I built the CAD model in SolidWorks, ran the flow and head-loss calculations, and planned our test runs. Our prototype met its 12-gallons-per-minute target on the second build, after we traced a pressure drop to a leak at the impeller seal and redesigned it.

Last summer I interned at Ridgeline Manufacturing, where I updated drawings to current GD&T standards and supported first-article inspections on machined valve parts. Working beside the machinists showed me how much a small design choice changes the time a part spends on the mill.

I also took two courses that match your posting: fluid mechanics, where my lab partner and I measured pump curves on the department's test loop, and machine design, where I sized shafts and bearings for a gear reducer and checked them against fatigue limits. Both taught me to start from the requirement, show every assumption, and check my answer against a test before I trust it. I'd bring that same habit to your design reviews from my first week.

I passed the FE exam this spring. I'd welcome the chance to talk about how I can support your product development team.

Sincerely, Priya Raman

Why it works

  1. Treats the capstone like a work project: the role, the tools, a measurable target.
  2. Includes the setback and how the team fixed it.
  3. Uses an internship to show drawing and inspection experience.
  4. Names the FE exam, the first step toward a PE license.

Skills to Highlight in an Engineering Cover Letter

CAD and drawings
Name the tools (SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, Revit) and the standards you draw to, such as GD&T.
Analysis and simulation
Mention FEA, CFD, or hand calculations, and one result that changed a design decision.
Design for manufacturing
Show you work with the shop floor, with a measurable result like time or cost saved.
Testing and root cause analysis
Describe a failure you investigated and what you changed.
Codes and standards
Name the ones relevant to the posting: ASME, ASTM, ISO, IEEE, or local building codes.
Licensure
List FE/EIT status and your PE timeline if you're pursuing it.

How to Write an Engineering Cover Letter

  • Tell one engineering story with a number in it: the problem, what you changed, and the measured result.
  • Match the discipline and industry in the posting. A civil firm wants permit sets and site work, not product design.
  • Put your EIT or PE after your name in the signature if you have it.
  • Mention the specific tools and standards in the posting, but only ones you've actually used.

Engineering Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

  • Listing every software tool you've touched. Pick the ones the posting asks for and show what you did with them.
  • Describing responsibilities without results. "Designed parts" is weak; "raised the safety factor from 1.4 to 2.1" is strong.
  • Writing one letter for every discipline. A letter about product design won't land with a civil or electrical firm.
