Dear Principal Nguyen,
I'm applying for the fourth grade teaching position at Maple Ridge Elementary. I hold a state teaching license in elementary education (K-6) and have taught third and fourth grade for five years at Lincoln Elementary, a Title I school where most of my students read below grade level when they arrive.
Reading growth is the work I'm proudest of. I use small-group guided reading every day, track progress with running records and our district's benchmark assessments, and regroup students every few weeks based on the data. Last year, 72 percent of my students met their spring reading growth goal, compared with 58 percent across our grade level.
My classroom runs on clear routines and relationships. I greet each student at the door, and we start the year by building our class agreements together. I've taught students with IEPs and 504 plans in every class, and I work closely with our special education teacher and ELL specialist to adapt lessons. I also call or message every family in the first two weeks of school with something positive, so the first conversation isn't about a problem.
I noticed that Maple Ridge recently adopted a science of reading curriculum. I completed LETRS training last year and helped my grade-level team plan our phonics block, so I would be glad to support that transition.
Outside the classroom, I've coached our after-school robotics club for three years. I'd welcome the chance to visit your school or teach a demo lesson. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Rachel Okafor
